SUNDAY SERMON SERIES: PAUL’S LETTERS FROM PRISON

Pauls Letters From PrisonPaul wrote the Books of Colossians, Philemon, Ephesians, and Philippians during his imprisonment in Rome. The Lord Jesus brought Paul to Rome to complete the mission strategy that Jesus gave to his disciples just before his ascension into heaven. Acts 1:8 states that Jesus told his disciples they were to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Paul was brought to Rome to complete the mission of bringing Jesus’ gospel to the ends of the earth. With the coming of Paul to Rome the gospel was brought from the Jewish capital of Jerusalem in the east to the Gentile capital of the world in Rome in the west.

We are currently in the letters written to the Ephesians as Pastor Paul expositorily* leads the congregation through these exciting, challengng, and insightful books penned by the Apostle Paul. Come hear and respond to the Word of the Lord with us this Sunday.

MID-WEEK BIBLE STUDY @ SANCTUARY CHURCH

Sanctuary Church is going through an entertaining and Scriptural insightful12-week DVD series at our mid-week bible study entitled “Drive Thru History.” The Drive Thru History Series is the brainchild of Jim Fitzgerald, Laurra Fitzgerald and Dave Stotts. Born in 2003, the original concept was quite simple – teach true history and make it fun. In 2005, Jim, Dave and a small crew embarked on a video series to do just that. So far there have been two full series created, one on ancient history and another on early American history. Each series contains 12 episodes packed with on location teaching, cutting edge animated graphics and more untold stories of history than you will ever find in school textbook… Sanctuary Church’s mid-week study is focused on ancient history. Definitions:

1.) Non-Denominational – “In Christianity, non-denominational institutions or churches are those not formally aligned with an established denomination, or that remain otherwise officially autonomous. This, however, does not preclude an identifiable standard among such congregations. Non-denominational congregations may establish a functional denomination by means of mutual recognition of or accountability to other congregations and leaders with commonly held doctrine, policy and worship without formalizing external direction or oversight in such matters.”

2.) Neo-Charismatic – “Neo-Charismatic churches were first identified in the 1970′s as those which embraced many of the doctrines and practices found within Pentecostal and Charismatic churches however were not specifically aligned with either movement. In the 1980′s Peter Wager coined the term “Third Waver” to describe a member of a Neo-Charismatic church.”

“Third wave Christians believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit including tongues, healing, and prophecy. They practice the laying on of hands and embrace the infilling of the Holy Spirit.”

“Neo-Charismatics, unlike Pentecostals, do not emphasize or insist on the practice of tongues and unlike Charismatics they are not aligned with traditional Protestant or Catholic denominations. They are, in
essence, non-denominational. There is no single form or governmental structure or style of church service that can be identified as specifically Neo-charismatic.”

3.) Expository Preaching – This method is generally used by  those who hold the Bible in high regard. Exposting the Bible is essentially explaining the Bible. This preaching method is generally verse by verse and, over a period of time, covers entire books of the Bible. Expository preaching will familiarize you with the meaning of the passage, its context, its language, and more. Here are some practical reasons that make it popular:

  • Because all of Scripture is God-breathed and for our benefit, there is not a page of Scripture that is not helpful to our faith, so we should examine it all.
  • From church history we know that influential preachers such as Justin Martyr preached expository sermons that went through books of the Bible line by line.
  • It allows non-Christians and new Christians to follow along more easily than if the preachers jumps around the Bible.
  • It doesn’t allow the preacher to avoid difficult texts and issues.
  • It helps teach the congregation to study the Bible for themselves.
  • It helps people to read and study along with the sermons each week.
  • It makes it easier for people to refer back to what they have learned in Scripture.
  • It forces the authority to reside in the text and not the teacher.
  • It trains people how to interpret the Scripture.

VISION

Our vision is simple.  We desire to KNOW God more.  As a result we will start to progressively GROW in our faith.  This equips us to GO into our community, modeling the incarnate Jesus’ ministry.

KNOW – John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

(The Great Commandment) Mark 12:29 “…’Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” – Jesus

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.” – Jesus

GROW – Eph 4:14 …we will no longer be infants… 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body…grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

GO – (The Great Commission) Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Our vision is progressively being realized by engaging in the 5 functions that every healthy church focuses on in order to be truly Biblical: ministry, evangelism, worship, discipleship, and fellowship.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

In essential beliefs – we have unity.

“There is one body and one Spirit … there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all who is over all and through all and in all.”  (Eph 4:4-6)

In non-essential beliefs – we have liberty.

“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters … Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?  To his own master he stands or falls… So then each of us will give an account of himself to God … So whatever you believe about things keep between yourself and God.” (Rom 14:1,4,12,22)

In all our beliefs – we show love.

“If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains – but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.”   (1 Cor 13:2)

1. We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life. (II Tim 3:15-17; II Pet 1:21)

2. We believe in one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Gen 1:1; Deut 6:4; Matt 28:19; Jn 10:30)

3. We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on high, He now is our High Priest and Advocate. (Jn 10:33; Isa 7:14; Matt 1:23; Lk 1:34-35; Heb 4:15, 7:26; Jn 2:11; I Cor 15:3; Eph 1:7; Heb 2:9; Jn 11:25; I Cor 15:4; Mk 16:19)

4. We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict men, regenerate the believing sinner, and indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living and service. (Jn 3:16-19, 5:24; Rom 3:23, 5:8-9; Eph 2:8-10; Tit 3:5)

5. We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost; only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. (Rom 8:13-14; I Cor 3:16, 6:19-20; Eph 4:30, 5:18)

6. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only grounds for justification and salvation for all who believe; only such as receive Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thus become children of God.  (Eph 2:8-10)

7. We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been born again by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the Head. (Rom 8:9; I Cor 12:12-13; Gal 3:26-28)

8. We believe in the personal, imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this hope has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer. (Acts 1:11; Rev 19:11-16)

9. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead – of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment. (John 5:28-29)

SERMONS WITH COMPANION STUDY OUTLINES

The “behind the pulpit” ministry of any church is one of the platforms by which God’s people learn about and apply the Bible into their day-to-day lives. This is also one of the ministries where vision is cast and direction is set. There’s a lot you can learn about a pastor and his church through this ministry, and we pray that you will be blessed and edified as well.

If you missed last week’s service and want to catch up, this is the place to be…right where you are…maybe with a hot cup ‘o joe and still in your jammies! And if you like, don’t forget a writing utensil and a pad of paper.

Better yet, you could shoot us an email. We’ll reply with an attached sermon note sheet. Just let us know which sermon.

Outreach Event

On Saturday July 26th, 2010 Sanctuary Church had its first outreach event. The team ministered to those that attended the Amber Du Bois Foundation “More Kids” Fundraiser at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. We provided prayer, counseling, and etc. Pastor Paul was honored to speak at the event as well. “More Kids” is a non-profit organization that has been changing California’s laws regarding missing and exploited children. This event was particularly memorable because of Mr. Du Bois’ announcement. He shared that through the direct efforts of the foundation, laws have been changed that contributed to the authorities finding their first missing child. Praise God!

Park Ministry

Until just recently, Sanctuary Church was conducting our main church service every Saturday morning at Grape Day Park in Escondido. It’s quite an experience to provide a formal church service to those who may feel uncomfortable going to a building.

To allow Jesus to use our eyes and respond accordingly to the spiritual, relational, and physical needs around us…to be His hands of healing and voice of deliverance; well, words just can’t express how amazing it is to be a part of His kingdom work.

Due to the winter months coming upon us, we moved our main service to the facility on Enterprise St, and we’re looking forward to opening our second main service – at the park – when warmer and drier weather comes back around.

Look for our church sign when you come to visit!

GIVING

Have these sermons been a blessing in your life? If so, we would like to make available an opportunity for you to partner with us through giving.

Why should we give? Jesus said in Luke 6:38 “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Giving is a biblical principal that when lived by, produces a rich harvest in our lives, not just in financial blessings, but rich in all aspects of life. Giving is not limited to simply our finances; it’s a lifestyle. When we give of our time, our love, our resources… you can expect to be blessed. And you can expect to grow further in your relationship with God.

And we don’t give to simply receive. God is more concerned with the condition of your heart as you give, rather than the quantity.

And the condition of your heart should be that you are simply responding to a God who has lavished His love on you. You’re acknowledging that He is your provider and that you’re trusting that He will continue to provide for all of your needs in accordance to His riches in Christ Jesus!

It is through a lifestyle of giving that the greatest blessings can be experienced.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.“- Proverbs 3:9-10
